Faye Chatzi:

A Living Thread Between Past and Present

A Greek artisan, textile artist, and experimental archaeologist, Faye Chatzi is dedicated to reviving the ancient art of weaving. Rooted in deep research and close collaboration with archaeologists, her work brings to life techniques practiced in the Cyclades over 7,000 years ago.

Each creation is made entirely by hand—without electricity or digital tools—using traditional instruments such as the spindle, the distaff, and the upright loom. This commitment to authenticity, paired with a refined artistic vision, results in textiles that are both culturally significant and contemporary. Her pieces have been exhibited in major museums across Greece and internationally, honouring heritage through craftsmanship.

Philosophy

Wool

Spun from Silence and Salt

Each spring, a time-honoured ritual unfolds on the uninhabited island of Rheneia, where Faye shears her own flock of sheep. The wool is washed in the island’s sea, then gently cleansed with green soap and dried beneath the Aegean sun.

Entirely hand-spun, the resulting thread is raw, pure, and deeply Cycladic—echoing the spirit of the land it comes from.

Rooted in Time, Made by Hand

The foundation of Faye’s practice lies in intention, patience, and respect for ancient knowledge. She works entirely by hand, without machines or electricity, embracing traditional tools and age-old methods that preserve the rhythm of craft.

Her chosen materials—wool and silk—hold deep meaning, selected not for ease but for their connection to nature and tradition. Each piece becomes a quiet bridge between the past and the present.

A Gentle Harvest
Silkworms raised on Faye’s family farm in Mykonos are nurtured using the Peace Silk method, allowing them to complete their natural life cycle before the silk is collected.

Handwoven textile made from silk produced by native yellow silkworms. This traditional fabric showcases the rich heritage of local sericulture and weaving craftsmanship.

Atelier

A Space Woven with Presence

Faye splits her time between Athens and Mykonos, with her working atelier currently hosted at Kalesma Mykonos, a hotel that shares her values of authenticity and reverence for heritage.

Guests are welcome to quietly observe Faye at work on her upright loom, as timeless techniques unfold, thread by thread. Around her, a curated selection of ethereal textiles, scarves, garments, and woven wall pieces invite touch and discovery. For those seeking something truly personal, bespoke commissions are also available, woven in dialogue with each guest’s own story.

A Craft in Harmony with Nature

Faye’s practice is rooted in sustainability, not as a concept, but as a lived, daily commitment. Every thread is made from ethically sourced, natural fibers…wool from free-roaming sheep, peace silk from her own silkworms, processed without chemicals, machinery, or electricity.

Her textiles are dyed exclusively with natural, non-toxic pigments that respect both the water and the skin. Because no synthetic materials are used, her fabrics decompose naturally, leaving no trace, just as nature intended.

Woven by hand on manual looms using ancient techniques, each piece carries a minimal environmental footprint. It is an antidote to fast fashion: slow, precise, and made to last. In preserving this method, Faye not only honors tradition, but also offers a tangible, thoughtful alternative to industrial production—one that protects both cultural memory and the planet.
